Bringing FRONTIErS to Houston: Toma's highlights from OTC 2025

Our PhD fellow Mohsin Ara Toma recently took the stage at OTC 2025, presenting her experimental research on suction anchors to an international audience of offshore experts. From insightful sessions to reconnecting with NGI colleagues, the conference was an inspiring milestone in her PhD journey.

I recently had the opportunity to attend the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) 2025, held at the NRG Center, Houston, Texas, from May 5th to 8th. This flagship event brings together energy professionals from around the globe to exchange knowledge, explore innovative ideas, and engage in constructive dialogue on the future of offshore energy.

The conference featured a large-scale exhibition showcasing the latest technologies from leading companies in the energy industry, along with keynote lectures, panel discussions, and a wide range of technical sessions. Among the many parallel sessions, I particularly enjoyed:

  • “Innovation in Offshore Wind Foundations, Mooring Systems, and Structures”
  • “Advanced Site Characterization for Fixed and Floating Offshore Wind: Navigating Shallow to Deep Waters”

A highlight of my experience was the opportunity to present recent developments from my PhD research in the technical session titled “Geotechnical – Study, Experiment and Field Application”, chaired by Yosmel Sanchez and Amir Rahim. My paper, titled “Experimental Approach Towards Investigating Cyclic Load Response of a Suction Anchor”, is available here.

While in Houston, I also had the pleasure of attending the opening ceremony of the new office of the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI). It was a great opportunity to meet colleagues from NGI Houston, as well as reconnect with friends and collaborators from NGI Oslo who were also attending OTC.

Overall, it was a memorable experience to be part of such a prestigious global event. I’m grateful for the insightful feedback I received from esteemed professionals and academics in my field, which will help guide the next steps of my research journey. And of course, I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the renowned Texas hospitality!
